Tablet shipments are below PC sales but a report is forecasting that they will surpass PCs by the end of the year.
Tablet shipments are about 60 million range, while PC sales are in the 80 million per quarter.
According to the analysts, the tablet marketplace is very similar to the smartphone market – iOS and Android opposed to Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Palm smartphones, allowing analysts to compare sixteen quarters of smartphone sales to eleven quarters of tablet shipments and make some assumptions about when tablets will be more sold than personal computers.
The rate patterns substitution between the markets are very similar, showing a 93% correlation over the first eleven quarters, but PC/ tablet substitution is happening even faster.
The switchover may occur driven by the accelerating adoption of cheap tablets in the emerging markets, which sounds more like Android than iPad.
